Army History
Ground Soldier Hardware Development
Computer Servants was awarded a contract through The U.S. Army Contracting Center – Aberdeen Proving Ground (ACC-APG) to design, develop, test and produce prototypes and refinement units for the first of its kind – a PLI-Isolator.
In order to provide on-going expertise for the Certification, Test and Evaluation (CT&E) process of the PLI-Isolator as well as cross domain solutions/integration with the Rifleman Radio for the Nett Warrior Program, Computer Servants was contracted to provide additional support (staff and hours).
The Nett Warrior program is an integrated, dismounted Soldier situational awareness system for use by leaders during combat operations. It is designed to facilitate command, control, and sharing of battlefield information and integrate each leader into the digitized battlefield. Program Manager Soldier Warrior (PM SWAR) within Program Executive Office (PEO) Soldier in Fort Belvoir, VA is the material developer of the System.
The Rifleman Radio developed by General Dynamics was designed to bring secure (Type 2) inter-squad communications to any war fighter on the tactical edge of the battlefield and enables Team and Squad Leaders to track individual soldier GPS locations.
Computer Servants Engineers and staff were able to successfully meet all program objectives and fulfill each deliverable on time and within budget.
As a result of the team’s hardware and software design efforts, dedication to the Information Assurance deliverables and high quality detailed verification testing efforts, Computer Servants staff has received and is thankful for on-going follow on orders.
We continue to be proud to serve the current and future soldiers.
Computer Servants participated as a subcontractor to General Dynamics on several armored vehicle contracts.

Design test interface box to test LRU using VXI test sets.
Commercial
Elevator Controllers – Local Elevator Company
Tasks included electrical circuit evaluation and fault isolation on an elevator controller. In an effort to troubleshoot a persistent communication bus failure our engineers identified possible faulty design practices and the most likely failure mode resulting in a quick, cost effective repair plan.
Electrical Technicians replaced failed components on a surface mount controller card. Component vendors were identified for hard to find bus controller chips.
Digital TV Converter Boxes – FCC/NTIA Contract
Computer Servants engineers were asked to support the FCC in the testing and evaluation of all coupon eligible Digital TV converter set-top boxes to be sold on the US market in 2007-2008. Tasks included the preparation of technical engineering reports comprised of test data, evaluations, analyses and conclusions. Recommendations, based on test results, were prepared, documented and delivered to senior Branch and Division managers within the FCC and NTIA.
Our engineers tested over 100 converter models to determine compliance with pertinent rules and regulations. Testing included the following: Decoding of all of the video formats contained in Table A3 of ATSC A/53E; Proper processing and display of ATSC A/65C (PSIP) data; Tuning of RF signal levels from -83 dBm to -5 dBm over TV channels 2 through 69; Other Tuner tests including Phase Noise, Co-Channel Rejection, First Adjacent Channel Rejection, Taboo Channel Rejection, Burst Noise, and Single Static Echo tests; Energy Standards, Input and Output, and V-Chip Functionality.
Mobile Surveillance System with GPRS Communication
Our Client is realizing a patent for a mobile surveillance system. Computer Servants engineers defined the requirements for the system, estimated prototype and manufacturing costs for the target product and plan to design a prototype of the final product.
A working demonstrator using PC based hardware and custom software was designed and tested. This cost effective tool will assist our client with marketing and refining characteristics of the clients final product prior to completing the final system design.
Marine and Scientific Research
Florida State University
Center for Ocean-Atmospheric Prediction Studies (COAPS)
Florida State University has designed a new instrument which can for the first time measure and monitor the ocean surface circulation within an inch of the surface where specific processes occur (the Stokes Drift). These important processes have never been measured, yet they are responsible for the movement of oil spills and other pollutants (plastic patches, river outflows, and radioactive leaks), the transport of fish eggs and larvae vital to fish life cycles, and the prediction of the movement of red tides to the coast. Existing drifters measure at least 50cm long/deep and are incapable of isolating the circulation at the ocean surface or the effect of the Stokes Drift.
The instrument we designed will help calibrate new numerical models including Stokes Drift parameterization and recently designed radars and satellites by providing a very new and unique sampling of ocean surface circulation.
Montague Marine Research
Aboard the Research Vessel (R/V) Montague
Montague Marine Research facilitates scientific research aboard the 58’ R/V Montague. Based out of Cordova in Prince William Sound, Alaska. The Montague is a seiner style research boat built for the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. With a total capacity of 8 persons and equipped with a dry lab, 5000 lb. main boom, hydraulic longline/gillnet reel and port and starboard picking booms, the Montague serves as a very capable mobile marine lab throughout the central Gulf of Alaska.
Navy/Marine Corps
Expeditionary Fighting Vehicle(EFV) Test Development
Assist with analyzing the feasibility of creating a TPS to test the Weapon Station Electronic Unit (WSEU) with the existing Test Plan. The Plan required communication between the Marine Corps TETS test equipment and the UUT using USB to RS232 and RS422 hubs.
The Firmware Support Manual (FSM) and CIDs documents for several internal SRU including Vista Single Board VME computer, DY4 processor board, Natel Power supply were reviewed by a Computer Servants Engineer.
Review of design requirements in the form of a Critical Item Specification for the Marine Corps Expeditionary Fighting Vehicles, EFV, Weapon Station Electronic Unit, WSEU.
Identified outputs requiring high current loading resistors and designed a suitable load condition including selection of hardware, determination of heat sink size, placement and functionality. Part specifications were reviewed and heated load conditions were considered to define the power sizing of the load resistors. Loads were required for signals including 28V Mil Std 1275, +/- 15V, 5V, and 26V 400Hz outputs.
Directed all aspects of the hardware selection and assembly of the first TPS unit.
Cables were designed for intermediate system testing of some subsystems and final deliverable harnesses were reviewed and revised as needed.
Fabrication of test hardware by a lab technician was directed, and checked prior to delivery.
Expeditionary Fighting Vehicle(EFV) Electronic Hardware Design and Support
Support the PDRR risk mitigation prototype units that were being built. Review and develop corrective action plans for grounding problems, drawing discrepancies and COTS card communication issues with PDRR hardware.
SDD prototypes were built and detailed design documents were studied, corrected where needed and placed under document control.
Component engineers, design quality assurance, test and manufacturing engineers were contacted and presented with design documents to verify the design.
Design information was acquired from SRU vendors to assist with the integration of many designs into one LRU design in order to complete the prototype builds
Identify circuits and responses that deviate from specification.
Define and author an engineering test plan that can be followed by technicians with little knowledge of the system to reliably test the CCA and LRU. . Several prototype units failed and Computer Servants used standard lab equipment to troubleshoot and identify failed parts or incorrect assembly processes.
Troubleshooting included identifying upgrade mods required to bring an older VME backplane to operational readiness.
